SPEAKER ABSTRACTS

Dr. Michael Woolfrey - educate participants on the advantage of new knee replacement technique for staff, patient and hospital.

Dr. Hossein Mehdian - to understand and review diagnostic imaging in commonly missed fractures. By the end of this lecture the participant should be able to recognize fracture patterns on X rays that can commonly be missed in the E.R. Department

Brian Fandrick, R.T. (Orthopaed) - demonstrate ankle taping and have delegates taping each other. Some discussion re anatomy and the purpose of taping.

Mary Kate Turner, R.T. (Orthopaed) Athletic Therapist and Patrick Smith, R.T. (Orthopaed)

  • review the mechanism (science & biology) about how bone stimulators utilizing ultrasound work to aid healing
  • review the trend toward increased use for Jones and scaphoid and tibial fractures in orthopaedic practice
  • review/present any new literature on the topic that speaks to 'evidence based performance measures' as it relates to outcomes in healing
  • demonstrate the application methods for exogen ultrasound delivery in common casting procedures
  • questions/answers

Dr. Kyle McLaughlin, Emergency Physician, Calgary, Banff, Canmore. Clinical Lecturer University of Calgary

Ultrasound is an inexpensive, quick, non invasive way to visualize many tissues in our body that avoids the harmful effects of radiation seen in other methods of diagnostic imaging. The units are small and portable allowing for immediate imaging which is ideal in Emergency Departments and at sports venues. Fracture identification has been an ideal indication for bedside ultrasound. Although it does not replace the use of Xray, it can help in identifying occult fractures in trauma, aid in closed reduction or be used in a limited resource situation where Xray in not easily available. Our goal is to introduce the potential applications for point-of-care ultrasound in the practice of orthopaedic medicine. During the session, participants will be introduced to the bedside ultrasound machines and there will be a review of the common orthopaedic applications. The practical portion will include identification of bones, soft tissue like the achilles and quadriceps tendons, joint (ankle, hip, knee and elbow) and common nerves used in regional blocks. This course does not replace the need to take a formal course in advanced applications of bedside ultrasound like the Emergency Dept. Echo (EDE) 2 course. There will be no certification offered at the completion.

Dr. Arun Sayal, Emergency Physician, North York General Hospital

  • Review ED orthopaedic cases that are common and commonly missed
  • Highlight important clinical aspects in the management of these cases
  • Highlight the emerging and important role the orthopaedic technologist can play in the emergency department
