Clubfoot the Ponseti Way - Barb Harvey, Physical Therapist, Clubfoot Clinic

Treatment of clubfoot has varied across the country and round the
world for decades. Since January 2003, a treatment protocol
following the Ponseti Method has been universally adopted at
the Hospital for Sick Children's Orthopaedic Clinic as the primary
treatment of choice for infants with idiopathic clubfeet. The Ponseti
method involves specific manual manipulation of the ankle and foot
through serial casting, in a technique which differed significantly
from traditional casting methods. Full correction is achieved
in the majority of patients within 10 - 12 weeks.

With the primary casting now under the physiotherapist
and orthopaedic technologists, in the past five years, our clubfoot
clinic has successfully treated over 300 infants with this complex
deformity, with a 98% reduction in open surgery.
