abuse.

ABSTRACT:
The
thought of our weakest members of society being physically harmed
by acts of commission and/or omission is distasteful to us all.
Child abuse is second only to sudden infant death syndrome as a
cause of mortality in infants between one and six months of age
and is second to accidental injury in children over one year of
age. (National Centre on Child Abuse and Neglect, 1997)
In
the United States, the annual incidence of abuse is estimated at
15 to 42 cases per 1000 children and appears to be increasing. More
than one million children each year are victims of substantial abuse
and more than 1200 children die each year as a result of abuse.
(National Centre on Child Abuse and Neglect, 1997). The Canadian
Incidence Study of Reported Child Abuse and Neglect in 1998 revealed
an estimated 133,573 children investigated for abuse, of which one
half were substantiated. (Canadian Incidence Study of Reported Child
Abuse and Neglect, 2001)
This abstract is a portion of the article
which appears in the Fall 2002 issue of BodyCast.
