Introduction:
Fourteen cases
of sleeve fractures of the upper pole of the patella have been
reported in the Japanese literature, but only one in the English
literature (Bishay, 1991). We describe a 30 year old man with
a sleeve fracture of the upper pole of the patella. Type 1 osteogenesis
imperfecta according to Sillence's classification (Sillence and
Rimoin, 1978) was diagnosed.
Case Report
A 30 year old
man fell down while walking and felt a severe pain above the
left patella.. He could not walk at all and was admitted to the
emergency unit of our hospital. Two months before injury, he
also fell down while walking and had severe knee joint pain on
walking. He was diagnosed as having an internal derangement of
the left knee. The pain had been relieved by conservative treatment,
but knee flexion was restricted up to 90° at the time of
the injury. His knee was thus forcefully flexed in the most recent
injury.
