MY
JOURNEY INTO THE DESERT:
By
John Delsey, RT (Orthopaed), Hamilton, Ontario
Abstract
Marhaba,
or in English, welcome, hello. My name is John Delsey, registered
orthopaedic technologist from Hamilton, Ontario.
My
journey began when I decided I wanted a change. Surfing the net,
I stumbled across an advertisement to work abroad in the Middle
East. Five months later, July 2001, I was waving goodbye to family
and friends on my way to Saudi Arabia, “The Magic Kingdom”,
The hardest part, of course, was saying goodbye to those I loved.
So I ended up in Riyadh, the capital of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
King
Fahad Nation Guard Hospital is an 800-bed trauma centre with the
largest and busiest trauma centre in the region. On arrival to the
Kingdom, I was given a few days to settle in and, after 24 hours
of travel, it was a blessing. My residence was a four-bedroom villa
which I shared with two Australian nurses. It was very comfortable
in size and amenities provided. The compound itself is a small city.
Anything that you require is all contained within the walls of the
compound: shops, cafes, salons, a driving range and an Olympic-sized
swimming pool. For a desert, it is impressive and luxurious.
This abstract is a portion of the article
which appears in the Winter 2004 issue of BodyCast.
